Company Christmas Party

Being that this is the holiday season, I felt it appropriate to tell a Christmas story. The fast food joint that I worked at was having it’s annual company Christmas party, some were more excited than others. We were allowed to bring one guest but they’d have to bring a gift as well to participate in the gift exchange. I decided to take my boyfriend at the time. We were already about a year into our relationship so I thought, “Why not”. The day of the party I had to work, but we were closing early so that everyone could attend. After my shift, I raced home to get ready and had the boyfriend pick me up. We get to the party, everyone is introducing everyone. Some time passes, we’re eating, having a few drinks and chattin’ it up. Then came the games and the gift exchange. It was going pretty well, everyone seemed to be having a great time. After the fun, it was time to receive our bonus checks. We were all huddled in a circle like dogs waiting for scraps. Anyway, the boyfriend is looking a little anxious, sort of like he was in a hurry to leave. He said he was going to put the gifts in the trunk and I said ok, I’ll be out as soon as I get my check. Everybody is saying their goodbyes and all of a sudden, one of the gal’s yelled out that her cell phone was missing. We all stopped to help her search for her phone, she was crying hysterically because her father had just bought the phone for her and she said he would kill her if she lost it. Not literally but you get it. Anyway, I felt really bad for her, poor thing was so scared, she didn’t even want to go home. I, (let me repeat that) “I”, suggested she call the cell phone using the boss’s house phone. I’m just trying to be helpful. Everyone’s like, yeah, call your cell. So she’s calling and we were all trying to listen for it. Out of nowhere, my boyfriend’s car alarm was set off. We run outside thinking whoever stole the phone was probably trying to break into my boyfriend’s car. Well, turns out, the alarm went off because my bf had the gal’s phone in his trunk. Holy crap!!! Are you freaking kidding me. That’s why the hell he was acting a little strange. The boss demanded he open the trunk and there it was. The gal’s phone. I was embarrassed and humiliated to say the least. He was ordered to return the phone and to leave the premises before they called the police. I had to apologize to everyone before we left and they were somewhat understanding because they knew I sincerely had nothing to do with that. We left, me with my head hung low in shame and embarrassment. I said to the bf, “What the hell were you thinking?”. If I hadn’t suggested she call her cell, he probably would have gotten away with it. I couldn’t show my face at work for a few days. It took a lot of courage for me to go back. My anxiety was through the roof, but I did it. I went back, apologized again and again and they were pretty accepting. They just didn’t want the bf anywhere near the diner if I chose to continue seeing him. Needless to say, I married the guy! P.S. They banned non employees from attending any future Christmas parties. Thanks Babe!! Hahaha….

    • My thoughts exactly. I mean, hello, I have to work with these people everyday. I was the hottest gossip for weeks. I think they probably still talk about it to this day, like an urban legend. Haha… I feel like Rudolph going down in history, only, I didn’t guide the sleigh and save Christmas.
